The Arctic Fox

The arctic fox is one of the most remarkable animals on Earth. It lives in some of the coldest places in the world, where temperatures can drop to minus fifty degrees Celsius. Despite these extreme conditions, the arctic fox has adapted perfectly to its frozen habitat.

Its thick, white winter coat provides excellent camouflage in the snow and keeps it incredibly warm. In summer, the coat changes to brown or grey to blend in with the rocks and plants. The fox also has short, rounded ears and a short muzzle to reduce heat loss.

Arctic foxes are opportunistic hunters. They eat lemmings, birds and fish, but when food is scarce they will follow polar bears and eat their leftovers. They can travel enormous distances across the ice in search of food — one fox was tracked travelling over 3,500 kilometres in just 76 days.
